Hugh Montgomery designs and builds contemporary furniture that has been influenced by the shaker and craftsman styles as well as Scandinavian forms. His designs reflect the lasting character of these traditional styles with a refined modern flare. Many of Hugh’s designs play with the natural tension between the gracefulness of a curve and the rigidity of a straight line. All of the furniture pieces presented in this website are Hugh’s original designs and built to order.

Hugh Montgomery is highly skilled in using traditional building methods such as mortise and tenon joinery, veneering, and bent wood processes. Commercial veneers, solid wood, and re-sawn veneers are often incorporated into a furniture piece’s design to achieve a consistent color match or to take advantage of a figured veneer. Hugh’s approach to furniture making is a balance between traditional hand skills and effective machine use.
